Build A Dividend Portfolio Review Routine

A repeatable monthly routine for checking income, concentration, data quality, and upcoming events.

Review Income Before Performance

For dividend-focused portfolios, start with income. Check what was paid, what changed from prior months, and which tickers contributed most. This keeps the review aligned with the purpose of the portfolio.

Then review market value and performance. Price return still matters, but it should not crowd out the income record.

Check Concentration And Calendar Risk

Look for income concentration by ticker, sector, and month. A portfolio can look diversified by position count while still relying heavily on a few payers or one part of the year.

Upcoming ex-dividend and payment dates can also reveal whether expected income is spread out or clustered.

Keep The Data Clean

A useful review routine includes checking new trades, imports, missing tickers, stale prices, and unusual dividend records. Data quality work is not exciting, but it prevents misleading charts later.

A short monthly review is easier than a large cleanup after months of small errors have accumulated.
